Advancing Total Force Fitness: The DoD Integrated Behavioral Medicine Program
A new initiative is needed to advance medical, psychosocial and spiritual care of service members, that advances the DOD’s medical pillar of Total Force Fitness. To this end, we propose the accelerated development of a capability focused on integration of behavioral strategies in the military health system. This entity is termed the Integrated Behavioral Medicine Program. Here we propose an innovative plan with one overarching mission:
“Empowering the individual to take charge of his or her own healthcare.”
Despite its simplicity, this ambitious goal requires reexamination of fundamental philosophical paradigms of western medicine, followed by key innovations enacted at the institutional, leadership, clinical, and patient level. A simple, scalable, cost-effective, tri-service approach to accomplishing this goal is offered.
